# Innocent Chicks: complete rules

Rules version 2026-10-15. Source: https://innocentchicks.com/rules/. Innocent Chicks is a bird-themed card game for 2–6 players: collect and protect your Innocent Chicks while attacking, stealing and interrupting your rivals. Buy the printed deck or play online for free.

## Editions

There are four editions. They share the same core rules but have different cards. Always check which edition a question is about: a card that exists in one edition may not exist in another.

- **Innocent Edition**: On sale (printed card game). The original printed game: protect your Innocent Chicks and beware the Booming Booby. The physical deck sold in the shop.
- **Pure Edition**: Online game only (not yet sold as a printed deck). The attack-focused edition. Like the Innocent Edition, but with Perfect Chicks and the Lovely Cockatoo. The default deck at play.innocentchicks.com.
- **Raging Edition**: Online game only (not yet sold as a printed deck). The gifting edition: no attack cards. Give away Raging Cockerels and Imminent Boobies before they cost you. Unlocked in the online game’s Store.
- **Mounting Edition**: In development (rules may change). Mount birds onto other cards to double an effect, force a play, or make a card reusable. Available in the online game for testing; not finished.

## Core rules (all editions)

### The game in one minute

- **Players:** 2–6. **Ages:** 7+. **Length:** about 15 minutes.
- **Goal:** finish the game with the best hand of chick cards.
- **On your turn** play as many cards as you like (or none), then draw 1 card.
- **Anyone** can answer a card with an **interrupt card**, even when it is not their turn.
- **The game ends** the moment the last card of the draw deck is drawn.

These rules are the same in every edition. Each edition has its own cards and its own way of
counting the winner: see [Innocent Edition](https://innocentchicks.com/rules/innocent-edition/), [Pure Edition](https://innocentchicks.com/rules/pure-edition/),
[Raging Edition](https://innocentchicks.com/rules/raging-edition/) and [Mounting Edition](https://innocentchicks.com/rules/mounting-edition/).

### Words used in these rules

| Word | Meaning |
|---|---|
| **Hand** | The cards you hold. Keep them hidden unless a card says otherwise. |
| **Draw deck** | The face-down pile in the middle. "Draw" always means take its top card. |
| **Discard pile** | Face-up pile of used and discarded cards. |
| **Play** | Show a card from your hand and do what it says. |
| **Pick** | Choose a card from another player's hand **without seeing its face** (they hold their cards fanned face-down towards you). |
| **Discard / Remove** | Put the card on the discard pile. |
| **Steal** | Take the card into your own hand. |
| **Cancel** | Stop a card that has just been played. It has no effect. |
| **Redirect** | Change which player an attack hits. |
| **Reusable** | Goes back to your hand after use instead of the discard pile. |
| **Special card** | A card that acts by itself when drawn or held (Booming Booby, Lovely Cockatoo, Imminent Booby, Rocking Mockingbird). |

### Setting up

1. Take the edition's **special cards** out of the deck (Booming Boobies in the Innocent Edition,
Lovely Cockatoos in the Pure Edition, Imminent Boobies in the Raging Edition).
2. Shuffle the rest and deal each player:

   | Players | Cards each |
   |---|---|
   | 2 | 6 |
   | 3 | 5 |
   | 4 | 4 |
   | 5 | 3 |
   | 6 | 2 |

3. Shuffle the special cards back into the deck and put it face down in the middle. This is the **draw deck**.
4. The player who most recently saw a bird in real life goes first. Play continues clockwise.

**Two players:** leave the Flaming Galah and the Golden Goose out of the deck.

### Mixing editions

You can shuffle two or more editions together into one bigger deck.

- Set aside **every** edition's special cards before dealing, then shuffle them all back in.
- Falcon Interceptor and Distracting Booby are the same card, so treat them the same way.
- Score with **points** (see *End of the game*). An Innocent Chick is worth 1 point, so an Innocent-only
game gives the same result either way.
- A bigger deck means a longer game. The online game lets the host choose a smaller deck.

### Your turn

A turn has two phases.

#### 1. Play cards

Play any number of cards from your hand, one at a time, or none at all.

- After each card, every other player gets a chance to **interrupt** it (see [Interrupts](https://innocentchicks.com/rules/interrupts/)).
Wait a moment before carrying the card out.
- A used card goes on the discard pile, unless it is **reusable** (Golden Goose, Flaming Galah,
and some cards in other editions), which go back into your hand.
- Some cards can only be played **once per turn** (Golden Goose, Flaming Galah). The card says so.
- Cards you steal or draw during your turn can be played straight away.

#### 2. End your turn

Say that you are ending your turn, then draw **1 card**. If you have **no cards** in your hand, draw **2** instead.
The player on your left takes the next turn.

### Special cards

A special card acts as soon as it is drawn, whether that's at the end of a turn, from a Golden Goose or from a Holy Dove.
Each edition has its own; the edition pages explain them.

### End of the game

The game ends **immediately when the last card of the draw deck is drawn**.

- That last card cannot be played.
- If it is a special card, it still takes effect (a Booming Booby still makes its player discard).
- Then everyone reveals their hand and the winner is worked out as the edition says:

| Edition | Who wins |
|---|---|
| Innocent | Most **Innocent Chicks** in hand. |
| Pure, Raging, Mounting, or mixed editions | Most **points**: Innocent Chick 1, Perfect Chicks 2, a pair of Ample Great Tits 5, Raging Cockerel −2 (plus Mounting bonuses). |

**Ties:** if two or more players are level, the one holding the **most cards** wins.
If that is level too, they are joint winners.

### Bluffing

You may lie about the cards in your hand. Misleading your rivals is part of the fun.

## Interrupts

Interrupt cards are played **in response to a card another player has just played**, even when it is not your
turn. They are how you defend yourself, and how you turn an attack around.

### The interrupt cards

| Card | Editions | Answers | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| [Falcon Interceptor](https://innocentchicks.com/cards/falcon-interceptor/) / [Distracting Booby](https://innocentchicks.com/cards/distracting-booby/) | Innocent / Pure, Mounting | Any action, attack or interrupt card | **Cancels** it |
| [Bouncing Penguin](https://innocentchicks.com/cards/bouncing-penguin/) | Innocent, Pure | Attack cards and other Bouncing Penguins only | **Redirects** the attack: you choose who it hits, and it now counts as yours |
| [Parroting Macaw](https://innocentchicks.com/cards/parroting-macaw/) | Innocent, Pure | Depends on the card it copies | **Copies** the last card played successfully |
| [Flashy Peacock](https://innocentchicks.com/cards/flashy-peacock/) | Raging | Action cards; interrupt cards | **Takes control** of an action card; cancels an interrupt card |
| [Belling Bellbird](https://innocentchicks.com/cards/belling-bellbird/) | Mounting | Action and attack cards | **Cancels** it, then returns to your hand |

Falcon Interceptor and Distracting Booby are **the same card**: Falcon Interceptor is its name in the Innocent Edition.

### How a chain of interrupts works

1. When a card is played, the other players may answer it with an interrupt card.
2. That interrupt card can be answered too, and so on. This makes a **chain**.
3. When nobody wants to add anything, the chain is settled **from the last card played back to the first**.
Each card acts on the card directly below it.
4. A cancelled card does nothing. Cancelling a cancel brings the card underneath back to life, so
**two Falcon Interceptors in a row cancel each other out** and the original card goes ahead.
5. A Bouncing Penguin cannot answer a Falcon Interceptor. But if two Falcon Interceptors cancel each other
out, a Bouncing Penguin underneath them still redirects the attack.

**Attacks that pick several cards** (Fishing Frigate, Rampaging Cassowary) are carried out one pick at a time,
and can be interrupted between picks. Picks already made stay made: an interrupt only affects the
picks still to come. Be quick to get the most out of your interrupt cards!

**Where the cards go:** interrupt cards always go on the discard pile. A cancelled card goes on the
discard pile too, except a cancelled Golden Goose or Flaming Galah, which returns to its owner's hand.

### Examples

#### Example 1: cancelling an action
- Player A plays **Golden Goose**.
- Player B plays **Falcon Interceptor**.
- Nobody plays anything else. The Golden Goose is cancelled and returns to Player A's hand; only the Falcon Interceptor goes on the discard pile.

#### Example 2: cancelling an attack
- Player A plays **Swift Bomber**.
- Player B plays **Falcon Interceptor**.
- Nobody plays anything else. The attack is cancelled and both cards go on the discard pile.

#### Example 3: cancelling a redirect
- Player A plays **Rampaging Cassowary** against Player B.
- Player B plays **Bouncing Penguin** to send the attack back to Player A.
- Player A plays **Falcon Interceptor** to cancel the Bouncing Penguin.
- Nobody plays anything else. The Cassowary carries on against Player B, and Player A picks the cards to discard.

#### Example 4: cancelling a cancel
- Player A plays **Rampaging Cassowary** against Player B.
- Player C plays **Bouncing Penguin** to redirect the attack to Player A.
- Player A plays **Falcon Interceptor** to cancel the Bouncing Penguin.
- Player B plays **Falcon Interceptor** to cancel Player A's Falcon Interceptor.
- The two Falcon Interceptors cancel out, so the Bouncing Penguin stands: the Cassowary hits Player A, and Player C picks the cards to discard.

#### Example 5: penguin on penguin
- Player A plays **Fishing Frigate** on Player B.
- Player B plays **Bouncing Penguin** to bounce it back to Player A.
- Player C plays **Bouncing Penguin** to redirect it to Players A and B.
- Nobody plays anything else. The last Penguin wins: Player C steals the 2 cards, from Players A and B.

#### Example 6: a Parroting Macaw as an interrupt
- Player A plays **Fishing Frigate** on Player B.
- Player B plays **Bouncing Penguin** to bounce it back to Player A.
- Player A plays **Falcon Interceptor** to cancel the Penguin.
- Player C plays **Parroting Macaw**, copying the Falcon Interceptor, to cancel Player A's Falcon Interceptor.
- Nobody plays anything else. The Penguin stands: Player B steals 2 cards from Player A.

## Innocent Edition

Status: On sale (printed card game). The physical deck sold in the shop.

The original printed game: protect your Innocent Chicks and beware the Booming Booby.

- There are no Perfect Chicks in this edition: the only score card is the Innocent Chick.

|---|---|---|---|
| Innocent Chick | Score card | 18 | Worth 1 point at the end of the game. In the Innocent Edition, the player with the most Innocent Chicks wins. |
| Swift Bomber | Attack card | 9 | Choose another player and pick 1 card from their hand without looking. That card is discarded. |
| Thieving Magpie | Attack card | 4 | Choose another player and pick 1 card from their hand without looking. Add it to your hand. |
| Fishing Frigate | Attack card | 2 | Pick 2 cards from other players’ hands without looking and add them to your hand. The 2 cards can come from different players. |

| Parroting Macaw | Action card | 2 | Repeat the last card that was played successfully (an action, attack or interrupt), as if you had played it. You may choose new targets. |
| Falcon Interceptor | Interrupt card | 4 | Cancel the card another player has just played: an action, an attack, or another interrupt card. |
| Bouncing Penguin | Interrupt card | 3 | Take over an attack: you choose which player(s) it hits instead. Everyone treats the attack as if it came from you, so stolen cards come to you. |
| Booming Booby | Special card | 2 | When you draw it, immediately discard it and 3 other cards from your hand. If you have fewer than 3 other cards, discard them all. |

| Bouncing Penguin | Interrupt card | 3 | Take over an attack: you choose which player(s) it hits instead. Everyone treats the attack as if it came from you, so stolen cards come to you. |
| Lovely Cockatoo | Special card | 2 | When you draw it, swap your whole hand with the next player’s hand (clockwise). The Cockatoo is then discarded. |

## Raging Edition

Status: Online game only (not yet sold as a printed deck). Unlocked in the online game’s Store.

The gifting edition: no attack cards. Give away Raging Cockerels and Imminent Boobies before they cost you.

- Deck: 56 cards.
- Raging Cockerels are worth −2 points each, so the score can go below zero.
- The only interrupt card is the Flashy Peacock.

| Card | Type | Copies | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Innocent Chick | Score card | 10 | Worth 1 point at the end of the game. In the Innocent Edition, the player with the most Innocent Chicks wins. |
| Perfect Chicks | Score card | 2 | Worth 2 points at the end of the game. |
| Ample Great Tits | Score card | 3 | Worth 5 points for each pair you hold at the end of the game. A single unpaired card is worth 0. |

| Flashy Peacock | Interrupt card | 5 | Take control of an action card another player has just played: you carry it out instead of them. Played against an interrupt card, it cancels that card instead. |
| Imminent Booby | Special card | 7 | Always face-up in your hand. If you still hold it at the end of your next turn, it explodes: discard it and 2 cards of your choice. |

## Mounting Edition

Status: In development (rules may change). Available in the online game for testing; not finished.

Mount birds onto other cards to double an effect, force a play, or make a card reusable.

- Winning: Most points wins: Innocent Chick 1, Perfect Chicks 2, Flamingo Show 1 per 2 face-up cards you hold. A Fun Duck doubles the points of the card it is mounted on. Tie: the player with the most cards in hand wins; if still tied, they are joint winners.
- Deck: 56 cards.
- This edition is not finished. Card effects and counts may still change.

| Card | Type | Copies | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Innocent Chick | Score card | 10 | Worth 1 point at the end of the game. In the Innocent Edition, the player with the most Innocent Chicks wins. |
| Perfect Chicks | Score card | 3 | Worth 2 points at the end of the game. |
| Flamingo Show | Score card | 1 | Worth 1 point for every 2 face-up (visible) cards you hold at the end of the game. |
| Flocking Bustard | Attack card | 8 | If you hold the fewest cards, discard 2 cards from your opponents’ hands; otherwise discard 1. You choose which opponents lose them. |
| Generous Pelican | Action card | 5 | Give 1 card from your hand to another player (a mount on it travels with it), or remove a mount from any card and return it to that card’s owner. |
| Greater Adjutant | Action card | 1 | Take 1 card from the top 10 of the discard pile and add it to your hand. |
| Distracting Booby | Interrupt card | 5 | Cancel the card another player has just played: an action, an attack, or another interrupt card. |
| Belling Bellbird | Interrupt card | 1 | Cancel any attack or action card. Then take the Bellbird back into your hand. |
| Rocking Mockingbird | Special card | 2 | Always face-up. While anyone holds one, nobody can play interrupt cards. At the end of your turn you must discard a card (it may be the Mockingbird itself). |
| Fun Duck | Mount card | 5 | Mount it onto any card. When that card is played its effect is doubled; on a score or penalty card it doubles the points. |
| Interesting Chat | Mount card | 5 | Mount it onto any card. That card becomes reusable: after it is played its owner keeps it to play again. |
| Tidy Hawfinch | Mount card | 2 | Mount it onto any card. Whenever that card’s owner ends their turn, they draw an extra card. |
| Upset Parrotlet | Mount card | 6 | Mount it onto any card. The owner must play that card when their turn ends. If it is an attack, it must target the owner themselves. |
| Clever Crow | Mount card | 2 | Mount it onto any card. When that card’s owner ends their turn, the card is discarded, unless they played it first, in which case the Crow drops into their hand. |

- Editions: Mounting
- Effect: Give 1 card from your hand to another player (a mount on it travels with it), or remove a mount from any card and return it to that card’s owner.
- When: During your turn.
- Afterwards: Goes on the discard pile.

### Greater Adjutant

- Type: Action card
- Editions: Mounting
- Effect: Take 1 card from the top 10 of the discard pile and add it to your hand.
- When: During your turn. The discard pile must not be empty.
- Afterwards: Goes on the discard pile.

### Parroting Macaw

- Type: Action card
- Editions: Innocent, Pure
- Effect: Repeat the last card that was played successfully (an action, attack or interrupt), as if you had played it. You may choose new targets.
- When: Any player, even on someone else’s turn, during the same turn as the card it copies.
- Afterwards: Goes on the discard pile.
- Everyone treats the copied card as if it came from you.
- It can copy another Parroting Macaw, in which case it copies whatever that Macaw copied.
- It cannot copy an attack while that attack is still being carried out: wait until the attack has finished.
- During an attack it can be used as an interrupt, copying the interrupt card just played against that attack (see Interrupt example 6).

### Falcon Interceptor

- Type: Interrupt card
- Editions: Innocent
- Effect: Cancel the card another player has just played: an action, an attack, or another interrupt card.
- When: Any time another player plays a card, even on someone else’s turn.
- Afterwards: Goes on the discard pile.
- Same card as: Called Distracting Booby in the Pure and Mounting Editions. Same card, same rules.
- Cancelling an interrupt card brings back the card underneath it. Two Falcon Interceptors in a row cancel each other out, so the original card goes ahead.
- Against an attack that picks several cards (Fishing Frigate, Rampaging Cassowary) it stops only the picks still to come. Cards already taken stay taken.
- A cancelled Golden Goose or Flaming Galah returns to its owner’s hand. Any other cancelled card goes on the discard pile.

### Distracting Booby

- Type: Interrupt card
- Editions: Pure, Mounting
- Effect: Cancel the card another player has just played: an action, an attack, or another interrupt card.
- When: Any time another player plays a card, even on someone else’s turn.
- Afterwards: Goes on the discard pile.
- Same card as: Called Falcon Interceptor in the Innocent Edition. Same card, same rules.
- Cancelling an interrupt card brings back the card underneath it. Two in a row cancel each other out.
- Against an attack that picks several cards it stops only the picks still to come.

### Bouncing Penguin

- Type: Interrupt card
- Editions: Innocent, Pure
- Effect: Take over an attack: you choose which player(s) it hits instead. Everyone treats the attack as if it came from you, so stolen cards come to you.
- When: During any attack you did not play, even on someone else’s turn.
- Afterwards: Goes on the discard pile.
- It only works against attack cards (and against another Bouncing Penguin). It cannot be played against a Falcon Interceptor / Distracting Booby.
- Several Bouncing Penguins can be played on the same attack. The last one decides where it goes.
- Against an attack that picks several cards it redirects only the picks still to come, and you may spread them over several players.
- If two Falcon Interceptors cancel each other out, a Bouncing Penguin underneath them still redirects the attack.

### Flashy Peacock

- Type: Interrupt card
- Editions: Raging
- Effect: Take control of an action card another player has just played: you carry it out instead of them. Played against an interrupt card, it cancels that card instead.
- When: Any time another player plays an action card or an interrupt card.
- Afterwards: Goes on the discard pile.
- It never takes over an attack.

### Belling Bellbird

- Type: Interrupt card
- Editions: Mounting
- Effect: Cancel any attack or action card. Then take the Bellbird back into your hand.
- When: Any time another player plays an attack or action card. Once per full round of turns.
- Afterwards: Returns to your hand (reusable).
- Page: https://innocentchicks.com/cards/belling-bellbird/

### Booming Booby

- Type: Special card
- Editions: Innocent
- Effect: When you draw it, immediately discard it and 3 other cards from your hand. If you have fewer than 3 other cards, discard them all.
- When: Takes effect as soon as it is drawn, in any way (end of turn, Golden Goose, Holy Dove).
- Afterwards: Goes on the discard pile together with the 3 cards.
- Booming Boobies are set aside before dealing, so nobody starts the game with one.
- If the last card of the draw deck is a Booming Booby, the game still ends but the player who drew it must discard first.
- Replaced by the Lovely Cockatoo in the Pure Edition.

### Lovely Cockatoo

- Type: Special card
- Editions: Pure
- Effect: When you draw it, swap your whole hand with the next player’s hand (clockwise). The Cockatoo is then discarded.
- When: Takes effect as soon as it is drawn.
- Afterwards: Goes on the discard pile.
- Lovely Cockatoos are set aside before dealing, so nobody starts the game with one.
- Drawn at the end of your turn: the swap happens, then play passes to the next player as usual.
- Drawn during your turn (Holy Dove, Golden Goose): you keep playing with your new hand.
- If you spot one with an Owl Micromanager, move it to where it helps you most.

### Imminent Booby

- Type: Special card
- Editions: Raging
- Effect: Always face-up in your hand. If you still hold it at the end of your next turn, it explodes: discard it and 2 cards of your choice.
- When: Takes effect by itself while held.
- Afterwards: Goes on the discard pile when it explodes.
- Get rid of it first by giving it away (Pleasant Pheasant, Puffin Around…) or discarding it (Deep Shag).
- A Booby still held when the draw deck runs out explodes too.
- It never scores.
- Imminent Boobies are set aside before dealing, so nobody starts the game with one.

### Rocking Mockingbird

- Type: Special card
- Editions: Mounting
- Effect: Always face-up. While anyone holds one, nobody can play interrupt cards. At the end of your turn you must discard a card (it may be the Mockingbird itself).
- When: Takes effect by itself while held.
- Afterwards: Stays in your hand until you discard it.
- Page: https://innocentchicks.com/cards/rocking-mockingbird/

### Fun Duck

- Type: Mount card
- Editions: Mounting
- Effect: Mount it onto any card. When that card is played its effect is doubled; on a score or penalty card it doubles the points.
- When: During your turn.
- Afterwards: Stays on the card it is mounted on.
- Interrupt cards can carry it but gain no bonus.
- Page: https://innocentchicks.com/cards/fun-duck/

### Interesting Chat

- Type: Mount card
- Editions: Mounting
- Effect: Mount it onto any card. That card becomes reusable: after it is played its owner keeps it to play again.

- Afterwards: Stays on the card it is mounted on.
- Page: https://innocentchicks.com/cards/interesting-chat/

- Page: https://innocentchicks.com/cards/tidy-hawfinch/

### Upset Parrotlet

- Type: Mount card
- Editions: Mounting
- Effect: Mount it onto any card. The owner must play that card when their turn ends. If it is an attack, it must target the owner themselves.
- When: During your turn.
- Afterwards: Stays on the card it is mounted on.
- Page: https://innocentchicks.com/cards/upset-parrotlet/

### Clever Crow

- Type: Mount card
- Editions: Mounting
- Effect: Mount it onto any card. When that card’s owner ends their turn, the card is discarded, unless they played it first, in which case the Crow drops into their hand.
- When: During your turn.
- Afterwards: Goes to the card owner’s hand when the card it rides is discarded or played.
